Smith Mountain Lake Retirement & Graduated Care Community

This class focuses on designing an assisted living facility.  We go through the whole design process and focus on ADA requirements, code requirements, and also design trends for assisted living.

Adjacency Matrix

The first part of the design process is programming, and this is where work through what rooms and amenities will be included in the facility, and what adjacencies are important.

Bubble Diagrams

The next phase of programming is bubble diagrams.  This is translating the adjacency matrix to a layout.  There is not a real building shape, but it gives the general layout and sizing.

Blocking Plan

The Blocking Plan turns the bubble diagram in to a building shape and helps determine square footage, but does not have walls, doors, hallways, or windows.

The preliminary plan is the rough draft of the final plan.  It is also the step after the blocking plan and includes hallways, doors, and windows.

Concept Sketches

Concept sketches are used to show your vision and ideas for the design.  These are not final decisions, but more of a way to get a picture and feel of the design before making anything concrete.  It is also a great way to show color schemes and cohesiveness throughout the project.
